If you've been keeping up with yardwork this summer, don’t pine over that pile of branches! The Routt County Wildfire Mitigation Council, City of Steamboat Springs, Steamboat Resort and SavATree are teaming up to offer free chipping of seasonal tree debris on Saturday, August 22.  Removing vegetation and other combustible materials from the Home Ignition Zone, the area immediately surrounding your home and other structures, is an important step in reducing wildfire risk. Community residents can drop off eligible aspen, cottonwood, evergreen and spruce limbs at Steamboat Resort’s Meadows Parking Lot between 9 AM and 1 PM. The material will be mulched, and the resulting wood chips will be available to residents at no cost from the SavATree yard. See full press release here. 

Help the Western Resilience Center team monitor cottonwood trees planted to shade the river and restore riparian areas during their fall ReTree program. Track tree growth and survival to help guide future planting practices. This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in citizen science to gather meaningful data for the river restoration effort. Monitoring spans from Catamount Lake to Hayden, with the majority of sites located within Steamboat Springs city limits and you can select whichever day(s) work best for you.  Options to get involved from August 24 through August 28.  More details found here.

Routt County remains in Stage 2 Fire Restrictions: Pursuant to the county ordinance, fires are restricted in unincorporated portions of Routt County due to high fire danger. Originally enacted by Routt County Commissioners in June, the restrictions remain in effect and prohibit campfires, among other activities. Given the dry conditions we’ve experienced throughout the Yampa Valley this summer, the continued precautions are understandable. For any of you that have a short-term rental license in Steamboat, make sure you are getting notifications from the city or your management company. Make sure your name and addresses are correct and check in with your management company, if they are the entity completing the forms. We are hearing of some astronomical fines being levied on homeowners for various reasons. Just make sure your license is compliant, so you don’t have any surprises.

In addition to injecting an overlay zone on developments and neighborhoods that are allowed to rent nightly, they have initiated a short term rental (STR) application process.
